Description

The original soundtrack to the play Outside the Lines by Daniel Burns. Outside the Lines is a theatrical work that follows a young man's journey to Kazakhstan, which starts out as a trip to study street performance, but ends up being a study on dual identities, cultural dissonance, and feelings of alienation. Premiered at the Boulder Fringe Festival, August 19-27 2016.

The soundtrack is largely based on the song Rolling Stone by Reverend Robert Wilkins, with five of the six tracks being some form of variation on the original blues tone. The variations range from ambient to experimental, with each new take on the Wilkins song reflecting emerging themes of the play. The one exception is the tune "Ay Ay Bopem", which is a rendition of a traditional Kazakh lullaby of the same name. The lullaby, traditionally sung by Kazakh women, expresses regret over having to move away from one's home (typically due to marriage).

A tremendous amount of credit for this album goes to pianist Grace Burns and guitarist Nathan Fenner, who did amazingly beautiful work on the tracks they were involved in and were enthusiastic about working on the project; and, of course, to playwright and actor Daniel Burns, a great friend and artistic collaborator, whose offer to do work for his play was the impetus and inspiration for these tracks.
